From DC’s E.L. Haynes school you can see the country of Madagascar — at least on the globe held by C+C President Lucinda Crabtree. This island nation is beset by poverty and blessed with natural beauty. When Lucinda visited recently she was struck by the contrasts between Madagascar and the U.S., but buoyed by the students’ curiosity at the school she visited and encouraged that English is one of 3 official languages. She arranged an exchange and now students at E.L. Haynes will be writing to their new Malagasy pen pals.
