06.14.09 — VOLUNTEERS (WOOD) CHIPPING IN
Lucinda Crabtree joined some 75 other volunteers this afternoon to build a new playground in Providence, Rhode Island’s Riverside Park. The park, previously a center of drug traffic and prostitution, is now a symbol of the city’s renewal under mayor David Cicilline. In town for the annual meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Lucinda worked side by side with mayors from across the country and others, spreading wood chips, painting decorations, and installing new playground equipment. “The work of our hands,” she said, “no less than that of our hearts and minds, will change this country.” “The need for volunteer work has never been greater,” she said, “and the results never so satisfying.” |
