09.17.08 — National Press Club

Crabtree + Company, Inc. (C+C), a DC-area marketing communications and design firm, participated in a green filmmaking forum today at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Sponsored jointly by Women in Film and Video (WIFV) and the Television, Internet and Video Association of DC (TIVA-DC), the special event covered a wide range of sustainable practices and carbon-reduction techniques.

Lisa Suchy, C+C’s Production Manager, presented a summary of her firm’s recent efforts to become more environmentally responsible and took questions from the audience. “We actually went carbon free in just six months,” said Suchy, “and it was surprisingly easy.” Suchy explained that the firm had a record, over its 25-year history, of becoming increasingly environmentally aware and involved, but said any company, big or small, could follow its lead. “Small businesses in particular seem at a loss for how to take that first step,” she said, “and what they don’t realize is that once they do, they’ll probably reduce their costs and increase their revenues.”

“Most of the questions I received,” said Suchy “focused on how to get started. Many of these firms are relatively small, as we are, and they’re searching for a way to put a stake in the ground and make a difference, without it costing an arm and a leg.”

“We are documenting our research, measurements, and successes on our website for other small businesses so they can get to carbon free as quickly as possible. If we can eliminate the learning-curve for others," explained Suchy, “we’ll all breath much easier a lot sooner.”

Joining Suchy on the podium were Larry Engel and Sandy Cannon-Brown, of the Center for Environmental Filmmaking, and Dr. Kiho Kim, Chairman of the Department of Environmental Science at American University.

C+C President Lucinda Crabtree emphasized the importance of the event, saying “The fact that this forum was held at the National Press Club underscores both the global importance of environmental awareness and the widespread practical interest in contributing to solutions.”
