Q & A

What’s the difference between an eBook and an ePub?
The terms are often used interchangeably, with eBook preferred for longer or non-periodic texts. EPUB (extension .epub) is also an open-source file format used for creating and displaying eBooks.

What is an eReader?
An eReader is a hardware device like Apple’s iPad, Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes & Noble’s Nook, or Sony’s Reader.

Is special software needed to read eBooks?
Yes. The software is pre-loaded on eReader devices (for example, iBook software comes on the iPads) and is sometimes referred to as a “reading system.” To read eBooks on a computer there are over a dozen different reading systems, most free and available for download. Some web browsers, like FireFox, can be used to read .epub documents directly.

What is the difference between an eBook and a PDF file?
Both are digital documents and there are many similarities. eBooks tend to be preferred for longer texts or to take advantage of various reading system features like bookmarking, note-taking, clicking on a word for a dictionary definition, flexibility in the size and style of the display font, etc. PDFs are preferable if the document integrates its text and graphics in overlays or if specific fonts must be preserved (eBooks typically have only a limited number of fonts).

Is it expensive to create an eBook?
Not necessarily. Like more traditional forms of publishing, the length of the text and the extent of the page design are the primary determinants of cost.

Can’t I just automatically convert one of my publications into an eBook?
There is software that claims to do this, but it is about as effective as turning a brochure into a website. To do either well requires an understanding of the software, an appreciation of the unique functions of the medium, and a willingness to design/adjust/configure each page.

Can I do one design and have it realized in both print and eBook format to maximize my reach?
Yes. In fact, if we know that a book or publication will go to both print and eBook formats, we can design for both mediums simultaneously and realize significant savings.

Have you done this before?
Yes, and we’d be delighted to show you some samples.

Can you help me think this through and advise me what to do?
Of course. Please call us at 703.241.9001 and we’ll figure it out together.
